The most unique experience in Melbourne!

Welcome aboard ‘Melbourne's Gooney Bird!’, our beautiful DC-3 airliner.

The ‘Gooney Bird’ is a large seabird found in certain islands in the Pacific Ocean, clumsy and awkward on the ground, but graceful and elegant in flight. The DC-3 shares these characteristics, and became known as ‘The Gooney Bird’ during World War II.

It was built in 1945 as a C-47B (the military version of the DC-3) and flew from new with the RAAF. It served as a passenger and freight carrier, including in two war zones. It came to us in 1989. We found it had only flown the equivalent of four years of normal airline use and was in excellent condition.

We converted it to a DC-3 airliner, installing 28 ex-Airbus passenger seats, additional insulation for noise reduction, modern avionics and safety systems, a flight lounge, toilet facilities and a galley.

The DC-3 has been described as the most reliable aircraft ever built. As an airliner, it is required to meet higher standards of construction, certification, maintenance and pilot training than those required for other aircraft.

DC-3 pilots and flight attendants have to comply with the same regulations as those required for our scheduled airlines.

For the past thirty plus years Shortstop Jet Charter has operated Melbourne's Gooney Bird so that you can experience the Golden Days of Aviation. We offer a wide range of aviation experiences, from functions in our historic hangar, wedding photography with our DC-3 or warbirds, to custom designed corporate and private functions which can include being whisked skyward by our beautiful DC-3. Our regular flight experiences to King Island and day trips to regional fine dining locations are unique experiences.

Commencing in September 2024 we are commencing ‘DC-3 Joyflights’, a low cost flight around the Melbourne CBD and surroundings.
